Council leader Emlyn Dole said: “This is a very serious issue which will affect thousands of families across South Wales and hundreds here in Carmarthenshire at Trostre in Llanelli.
“The steel industry is extremely important to the local economy here in Carmarthenshire and in Llanelli in particular. Local families are greatly concerned about the future of the industry and the Trostre works. This plant is a modern facility that should have a viable future as part of the UK industrial infrastructure.
“I am calling on the UK and Welsh Governments to do everything they can to ensure a vibrant steel industry in the UK and South Wales. It is vital that action is taken to safeguard the future of the industry as people’s livelihoods depend upon it and steel is such an important part of manufacturing in this country.”
