In a special celebration of Prince Charles’s 50th Anniversary of his investiture as Prince of Wales, Her Majesty the Queen has decreed by royal charter that each county in Wales can put forward any town within their borders as a nominee for city status.

It was in 1969 that ‘Prince Charles’ became the Prince of Wales cementing his place in history as the ceremonial ruler of Wales.

The natural choice.

In response to this decree, officials within the council have put forward Carmarthen as the county’s candidate for city status calling it the ‘natural choice’.

Cllr Glanmor Sneedly, chair of the County Council’s local history committee said ‘Carmarthen is the natural choice for city status within Carmarthenshire, the clue is in the name.

‘Carmarthen has a rich cultural heritage, across a vast swathe of history and is the county town.

‘The committee and I have come to the unilateral decision to put Carmarthens’ application for city status forward as lots of important council officials have offices in Carmarthen on Castle Hill (formally Gaol Hill) so it’s only fair to recognise the hard work done by these esteemed public servants by transforming Carmarthen into a city.

No Bias

‘‘I might even get a pay rise,’ he continued, before stating that it would be good for morale, ‘‘which is already quite low due to tory cuts,’

It’s practically a city already, it’s a city in waiting…

Cllr Sneedly went on to say that ‘we’ve only got Llanelli as the other urban centre within the county but things aren’t very nice down there at the moment so we’d rather not put Llanelli forward as city and county of Llanelli don’t make much sense.

‘Merlin wasn’t born there.  It’s only an over sized copper works, and that’s gone now.  You can’t park the car there and the town centre is full of charity shops and infested by chavs.

“Why on earth would anyone make such an awful place a city, it’s undeserving.”

The County Council put forward the plans in a ten minute public consultation between 1.50 and 2.00 Am last night, stating that the results have been encouraging, before issuing a statement to local residents

Local Vicar Rev Bryony James of St Adeon’s Catholic Church said in response to the statement that this was ‘blessed news indeed.’

“We’ve been ringing the bells with glee when we found out Carmarthen is being put forward!”

“Carmarthen is much like the heavenly city described in the Bible where everything is perfect.”

“The chefs are french, the mechanics are all german, the stylists are all italian, and the ethnic restaurants bring the finest foods from all over the world to your tastebuds.”

“Whereas Llanelli is much like hell, open Pandora’s box and you’ll see Llanelli Town Centre!”

“The contrast between heavenly Carmarthen and hellish Llanelli will be the subject of this week’s sermon, he continued, before stating that he’s expecting a full house on Sunday, as all 6 parishioners are expected to turn up.”

It was also revealed that under the new plans for city status for Carmarthen, that Llanelli would be incorporated within the city and county of Carmarthen as a suburban area.
