Transport Improvements Get Green Light

Nearly £2 million of funding for projects across Pembrokeshire to improve transport and roads – together with walking and cycling facilities – has been announced.

The money has been allocated from Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund, Road Safety Grant and Safe Routes in Communities funding to projects that will help improve access and safety, deliver economic benefits, and promote cycling and walking.

Pembrokeshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transportation and Major Events, Councillor Rob Lewis, said: “We’ve worked hard to secure this money and it enables us to carry out some much needed infrastructure and to improve road safety and transportation links across the County.

“The Council is committed to improving links and safety for residents and visitors and this money will help us do more than we would have otherwise been able to do.”

The bulk of the funding is for the £780,000 Glasfryn Road improvement scheme in St Davids which entails widening the road and the provision of a shared use path together with the installation of a roundabout at the southern end on the A487. It should be completed over the next 12 months.

The scheme is just one of a number of improvements that are taking place county-wide as part of the grant including: access improvements in Fishguard town centre and various road safety schemes including educational work and a Safer Routes in Communities scheme.

The full list of Pembrokeshire projects to receive funding for 2016 – 2017 is as follows:

• St Davids Sustainable Access Project  at Glasfryn Road

To complete the widening of Glasfryn Road, the provision of a roundabout at its southern end and to provide a new shared use path.  

• Fishguard Town Centre Access Improvements (Chimneys Link)

To complete the detailed design, statutory procedures and accommodation works to prepare the site for the construction of a new link road between High Street and West Street, Fishguard, in 2017 – 2018 (dependant on a future funding application).  

• Active Travel Mapping  

For the preparation of Integrated Network Maps as required by the Active Travel (Wales) Act , 2013.  

• Road Safety Capital Schemes  

A478 Narberth Road, Tenby: junction improvement.

B4325 Neyland to Milford Haven: pedestrian and route awareness scheme.  

• Road and Pedestrian Safety at Schools (20mph Speed Limits / Zones)

Ysgol Bro Dewi, St Davids.

Fenton CP School, Haverfordwest.

Wiston Primary School.

Coastlands Primary School, St Ishmaels.  

• Road Safety Revenue Schemes  

Cycle Training; Drive for Life; Kerbcraft; Motorcycle Intervention; Pass Plus  

• Safe Routes in Communities   

Milford Haven Secondary School: to provide and improve walking and cycling routes to school together with pedestrian crossing facilities.
