New research by SensatioNail has revealed Welsh women’s beauty secrets. A streaky tan is by far deemed the worst beauty sin with 61% making this statement. While classic faux paus of lipstick on your teeth (59%) came in second and mascara panda eyes was third (50%).

On the opposite end of the spectrum, women reported good hair as being the most important thing to make a good first impression (52%). Followed by flawless skin (15%) and well painted nails (15%) in joint second place. All traits of our top Welsh beauty icons. The nation most aspires to: Kate Middleton (30%), followed by Joanna Lumley (28%) and Helen Mirren in joint second place (28%).

It was also revealed that we are a nation of beauty hoarders. More than eight in ten women have old cosmetics at home that they never use. The top reasons being they never throw anything away (49%), items go out of fashion (31%) and they have nail polishes that chip or don’t apply well so they don’t use them (22%).

Welsh women estimate their make-up bags are worth an impressive £111. But we also have at least £70 worth of beauty products we never use and we would like to buy more! More than four in ten (44%) of Welsh women say they would get more massages if they had more time or money, just ahead of manicures and pedicures (43%) and hair blow drys (33%).

We are more efficient with how we spend our time though as most women get ready for a big night out within an hour (33%). Some have more time to dedicate to beautifying and spend up to two hours (17%). The North West region are most dedicated to their beauty routines with the highest proportion of women that take an impressive 2-3 hours to get ready. Wales are more relaxed with 19% of women ready to head out in just 15 minutes!

Women affirmed a polished look makes an impression in the workplace and even on their emotions. More than a quarter of women said they paint their nails to give them a more polished and professional look (26%) and a further (39%) said they painted their nails to feel more confident. When asked about the greatest beauty development of the last decade waterproof mascara came out on top (30%), followed by gel nails (28%) and teeth whitening (26%).
