Work has started on the site for the new £11million pound school at Seaside in Llanelli.
It will replace Copperworks Infants and Lakefield Primary Schools, and will have the capacity for 420 pupils, along with 60 nursery places.
The new Seaside School will be bilingual offering education through English or Welsh to children aged between three and 11.
It is hoped that the new building, which will be situated on the former Draka site in Copperworks Road, will be completed by the summer term of 2018.
It is being delivered through Carmarthenshire County Council’s Modernising Education Programme, with part funding through the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools initiative.
Following the publication of a statutory notice the County Council recently approved the proposal to formally bring the two schools together.

Education executive board member Cllr Gareth Jones said: “The new school will provide the modern facilities and the right kind of learning environment the children need.
“It will also help meet the increasing demand for bilingual primary education in this area.”
Local contractors TRJ have been appointed to carry out the work, and have already started on site.
Council Leader Cllr Emlyn Dole said: “This is a real boost to the schools and the community to see work start on this project.
“I look forward to visiting it again when it opens its doors to pupils.”
