Sporting groups, businesses and community groups are being asked to join in the fun for the annual Carmarthen Town Mayor’s Fun Run races.
May Bank Holiday Monday, May 2 is the big day for the races through the centre of Carmarthen.
“There were more than 650 runners last year and there was a wonderful carnival spirit in Carmarthen town centre,” said fun run publicity officer Robert Lloyd.
“This year, we are hoping for even more runners and are particularly keen to encourage team entries.
“There’s a special ‘corporate’ entry which allows businesses and community and sporting groups to enter teams of a minimum of 10 runners.
“We also have a ‘relay’ entry which allows teams of three to complete three individual laps rather than complete the whole 5K circuit.
“Businesses and community groups will find it a great opportunity to give themselves publicity on the streets of Carmarthen and raise cash for charitable causes they care about very deeply.”
This year, the races have a new major sponsor in Gwalia Surveyors.
Mr Lloyd added: “Llyr Lane, a director at Gwalia Surveyors, has been very helpful and has added the company’s support as the major race sponsor. We also have other sponsors for the event and we are hugely grateful to local businesses for their support.”
Gwalia Surveyors was launched in 1982 and has grown into an experienced and well respected team of building and land surveyors, becoming a multi-disciplined survey consultancy in 2008.
The firm has offices in London, Cardiff and Llanelli.
Runners of all ages, shapes and sizes are being encouraged to take part in the Fun Run races on May Bank Holiday Monday, May 2.
The event has been held in the town over the past 34 years.
“This is the 35th running of the races and we are hoping for a bumper turnout,” said race organiser Noelwyn Daniel.
“There were 657 runners in 2015 and we are hoping for many more this year!
“In particular, we are keen to inject as much fun as possible into the event – encouraging people to take part in fancy dress and asking local sporting teams, organisations, pubs and clubs to consider entering teams.
Mr Daniel added: “The beauty of the Carmarthen Mayor’s Fun Run races is that they take place in the heart of the town centre, affording great opportunities for spectators to cheer on the runners.
“We are also encouraging local businesses to enter teams. Businesses can dress up in the corporate colours and logos and earn themselves some free publicity by taking part.”
The event has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years with many local groups and organisations benefiting.
The nominated charities set to benefit this year are –
Papur Llafar y Deillion Caerfyrddin a’r Cylch – Carmarthen and District Talking Newspaper for the Blind
ATC
Carmarthen Girl Guides
Nightlight
Schools are being contacted and visited by race organisers to encourage the pupils to sign up for the event.
There is the main 5k fun run and a series of junior races.
The junior races cater for school years two to 10. The senior fun run has categories for males and females aged under 40 and 35, and veterans groups for older age groups.
