A new, vibrant Swansea music service is about to take shape.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet has agreed to uncouple the current music service the council jointly provides with Neath and Port Talbot.
Councillors have agreed there will be a music service for Swansea and that all learners will continue to have access to high-quality music support.
And by going it alone, Swansea will have the opportunity to develop the sustainable, consistent, professionally-organised, and delivered service that schools and their pupils need.
Joint orchestras across Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot will continue as they are unaffected by today’s decision.
Cllr Jen Raynor, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “We believe the best way to protect the service and for children to be supported to unlock their musical aspirations is to have a music service which is consistent, financially sustainable, and works for schools and learners.
“Today’s decision is not the end of music in the city, it is a new beginning. It will enable us to move forward on work to improve the music offer to schools and their pupils, including those unable to fund private tuition.
“I hope residents of all ages who have shown such a passion for music continuing in the city will now get behind the new service and be part of making sure that music thrives here for years to come.”
The decision means Swansea Council will continue its part-funding for the service for the time being. A new Swansea schools’ music service will now be developed to be launched in September.
