A newly formed voluntary group – Syria Sir Gar – is holding a public meeting on Monday 16th May at 6.00 in Antioch Church to set out its plans to offer support to refugees due to arrive in the county from Syria.
Following an announcement from Carmarthenshire County Council that it will be hosting vulnerable people as part of a national Home Office initiative the voluntary group has formed to offer humanitarian support to the new arrivals.
The group has been set up by local people – coming together from a range of backgrounds and organisations including community development, equality, faith groups and others – and will operate under the banner of the long established Llanelli Multicultural Network.
Group spokesperson , Steve Kelshaw, says “These families are escaping from the most desperate situations and I am sure local people will welcome them into our community. This is not about the wider debates around war, religion or immigration. This is about people in need and helping our neighbours”.
Anyone interested in finding out more is urged to attend the meeting at the Antioch Centre.
The group have also set up a Facebook page Syria Sir Gar and a Twitter page @Syriasirgar
