The Group has a Facebook Page Syria SirGar

Syria – Sir Gâr is an independent, voluntary, group of individuals who have come together to support vulnerable individuals and families who are due to arrive in Carmarthenshire as refugees from Syria.

The main aims of the Syria – Sir Gâr group are:

  • To provide a befriending service to those individuals and families who choose to make use of this service
  • To act as liaison between Syrian individuals, families and the local community
  • To provide education and information to local schools, community groups and other organisations on the reasons why refugees are coming to Carmarthenshire

The Syria – Sir Gâr group is not aligned with any political or religious movement.  The primary focus of the group is on the humanitarian needs of individuals and families arriving in Carmarthenshire from Syria.

The individuals who have come together to form Syria – Sir Gâr are from a range of backgrounds.  Many have skills and experience of community development, equality and diversity, training and other relevant fields.    While some members of the group are aligned to faith groups others are not and the group is open to any member of the community who supports the broad aims outlined above.

The group has particularly benefitted from working with Syrian born nationals who already live and work in Carmarthenshire.  This has given the group a better understanding of the likely needs of Syrian people arriving and it is anticipated that it will allow better communication with the Syrian refugee families and individuals.

For fundraising and organisational purposes the group is set up under the auspices of the Llanelli Multicultural Network and works closely with CAVS the umbrella body for the third sector in Carmarthenshire.

The group has worked closely with colleagues in the local authority, the multi-agency group (that has been established to plan for the arrival of Syrian refugees), Equality Carmarthenshire (a partnership of voluntary and statutory organisations) and the Antioch Church, where the group has benefited from the use of their facilities and local knowledge.

However, Syria – Sir Gâr is independent from any statutory body or religious group and operates as an autonomous voluntary group.
