True levels of EU migration to Britain over the last five years were more than double the total claimed in official figures it has emerged.
The total number of arrivals from the EU between Jul 2010 and June 2015 was reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as just 990,000 – despite 2.23m national insurance numbers having been issued to EU nationals over the same period.
Between July 2014 and June 2015, the ONS reported that 260,000 EU migrants arrived in the UK – with almost 700,000 national insurance numbers being issued to EU workers over the same period.
Leader of UKIP in Wales and Vote Leave campaigner, Nathan Gill MEP, said:
“These figures, which the UK government didn’t want you to see, show the huge pressures being placed on public services by EU migration.
“It’s the great EU migration deceit, and the government did everything they could to block the release of these figures before the referendum.
“What we now know is that the scale and impact of immigration from the EU is far higher than previously admitted, and it is clearly placing huge strains on the Welsh NHS, housing, schools and other services.
“The Conservative Government pledged to cut EU migration at the last General Election and it’s clear that this pledge is completely unrealistic for as long as we stay in the EU.
“The only way that we can take back control of our borders and get immigration down to sensible, manageable levels is to Vote Leave on 23 June.”
