Last weekend we took the long trip to play Devon Sharks for the first in a newly created annual shield. This shield was created to link both clubs together to help promote the game in both areas, the series was also organised between both clubs to be called ‘The heartbeat memorial shield’. This shield has been created in order to remember the sports stars that have passed away due to various heart conditions and both of the clubs mission was to encourage every sports facility to have the right equipment including defibs and basic cpr trained staff that save lives.
From the kick off, the Raiders applied the pressure and Devon made a mistake allowing Raiders winger Liam Liam Johnson going over to score, with minutes remaining Devon had a few more chances and managed to score bringing the score to Devon sharks 10-20 West Wales Raiders at half time.
With both teams going in for half time to dry off as the weather conditions were so strong, the teams came out at a slower pace to begin with, during the second half it took a long time for the first score as both sides had their opportunity but Raiders went over again with debutant Mathew O’flanagan diving over for his first ever try for the Raiders, with only 15 minutes left Raiders had opportunities to make the score? But they made a few mistakes and it only took 2 opportunities to finish the game Devon Sharks 10-38 West Wales Raiders.
During the week it was discussed between both sets of coaching staff which squad the Raiders would travel with, as we are currently in the middle of our CLS season and the junior and senior welsh conference leagues are just beginning we agreed to take a mixture of players with a few debutants, some under 17s and the majority of our reserve squad.
