FINCH-SAUNDERS: ‘Fresh, transparent approach’ needed on local government

Further to comments from the Welsh Local Government Association that an “urgent need for clarity” is needed as to Welsh Government plans to reorganise the nation’s councils, Aberconwy AM Janet Finch-Saunders said:

“The Welsh Government’s centrist, marker-pen assault on Wales’ communities caused much disruption and confusion during the last Assembly, with no result.

“Whilst the First Minister has confirmed the 2017 local government elections will go ahead, we know little as to the Welsh Government’s longer-term plans for reform.

“With the WLGA speaking of a lack of clarity, and even Labour Councillors calling for an end to the administration’s top-down approach to re-organisation, it is clear a fresh, transparent approach is needed.

“As concerns continue over future service provision, Council Tax rates and the very future of many of Wales’ proud counties, it is clear the views and wishes of local people must be at the centre of any plans to re-draw our nation’s Local Authority map.”

The comments were made in a WLGA Coordinating Committee paper, entitled Local Government Reorganisation in Wales – Taking Stock.
