Chris Thair, Wales Rugby League’s Chief Executive Officer, has spoken in favour of the Big Welsh Derby day this Saturday at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park and has said that it’s an event that deserves full support.
Wales’ only two professional Rugby League outfits in South Wales Scorpions and North Wales Crusaders face each other in Kingstone Press League 1 in the headline game that kicks off at 5pm.
Beforehand, the best of the Welsh community game is showcased with Valley Cougars from Treharris, who won the RFL Conference South competition in 2014 and finishing as league leaders last year, taking on Cwmbran’s Torfaen Tigers at 12.30pm.
Then at 2.30pm, the South Wales Scorpions academy side face their toughest test yet when Super League’s Salford Red Devils travel to face them in a massive challenge match.
Thair said: “The Big Welsh Derby is fast becoming one of the key dates in Rugby League’s calendar of events for Wales.
“South Wales Scorpions should be congratulated for building on the inaugural 2015 event, also held at Cardiff Arms Park, which saw the club break their all-time attendance record, embrace the community with curtain-raiser games and have the main game appear on domestic television channel S4C.
“This year the Scorpions have built on this original blueprint by establishing a fantastic hospitality function with former Wales internationals set to speak, and this club led event has our full support.
“The three games that the Scorpions have lined up on Saturday really encompass everything about Wales Rugby League – community, pathway development and international players.
“The Big Welsh Derby 2 will showcase it all and WRL wish the event every success. I look forward to attending and seeing as many people as possible on Saturday.”
Tickets for the whole day cost just £10 for adults, £5 concessions and £1 for juniors. Hospitality tickets are priced at £30 per person or £250 for a table of ten. This ticket includes access to all three matches plus a celebrity dinner featuring the three former Wales and Great Britain stars. They can be bought by going to www.scorpionsrl.com.
