“One of the highlights of my year as High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan 2015/16 was to spend a morning with the staff of the mounted section of South Wales Police.

“and the stars of the show, the police horses. It was wonderful to see the well organised policing operation that so complements other police departments throughout the force.

“Not only are these fine animals able to be a calming influence during public events, but they are a vital tool when officers have to cut through certain areas that police vehicles find more difficult. This was explained by Steph (title and second name) one of the team who showed us around the stables in March.

“Mounted police officers had been patrolling around Cardiff and had been alerted to reports of a missing person in the area. They were able to locate the body of the missing person in woods in a location inaccessible by police vehicles.

“Of course they act as a visible deterrent to some, but are also a welcome sight to many of us on sporting, public or state occasions with their kind eyes, groomed coats and gleaming tack ready to be of service whatever the task.

“I was fortunate to ride Samson, one of the more senior horses who was as strong as his name but beautifully mannered.

Exercising him in the police ménage attached to the stables at Waterton was a complete treat and a morning to remember during my year as High Sheriff.”

South Wales Police is proud of its facilities and resources. We welcome partnership work and serving the communities of South Wales.
