Boost for campaign as AM announces they’re backing Brexit
The Vote Leave campaign has received a boost after Aberconwy AM, Janet Finch-Saunders announced that she now plans to campaign for Britain to leave the European Union.
Mrs Finch-Saunders took the decision recently after being won over by the “overwhelmingly positive case” being made by Vote Leave, and had previously been planning voting to stay.
The Aberconwy AM, a Welsh Conservative, said that her firm belief in the principle of localism had also been a factor, and backed calls for power over lawmaking to reside in the hands of politicians who have Wales’ best interests at heart – and who are accountable to the Welsh public.
She said:
“After a great deal of consideration, I have been won over by the overwhelmingly positive case for leaving the European Union.
“Whilst many in the remain camp are peddling what amounts to ‘project fear’, I have been impressed by optimistic arguments for taking back control of our democracy, borders and money. That’s why I’m now actively campaigning for a Vote to Leave the EU.
“Here in Wales, recent opinion polls show that the Welsh public are increasingly taking the same view, and are switching off from a remain campaign that seems intent on talking Wales down.
“In contrast, a Vote to Leave the EU would be a shot in the arm for democracy and it’s insulting to hear senior politicians in the remain camp who seem unwilling to back Wales and the UK to thrive. Even the Prime Minister has said that the UK could flourish outside of the EU.”
Mrs Finch-Saunders argued that more power would be put in the hands of local communities, and politicians – at the expense of the unelected, unaccountable European Commission.
Around half of our laws are now made by EU politicians in Brussels who we never voted for.
Mrs Finch-Saunders said:
“I have always backed the principle of localism, with Welsh communities having more say over their own affairs and as an elected politician I believe that we should be accountable for the decisions we take – that just isn’t the case with the EU,
“It cannot be right that laws can only be brought forward by the unelected European Commission, and I want to see power in the hands of the UK and Welsh Governments who are ultimately accountable to the public at the ballot box.
“That’s why we need to Vote Leave on June 23 and take back control of our ow affairs.”
