A new General Manager for North Wales is being sought by the Welsh Rugby Union – with CEO Martyn Phillips hailing the appointment as potentially ‘game changing’ for the national sport.

The ‘development region’ of North Wales, which counts the newly promoted RGC 1404 as its flagship side, is an integral part of the WRU’s strategic objective to drive participation in Wales’ national game at all levels across the country.

RGC 1404, this season, won promotion to the Principality Premiership – completing a remarkable rise through the ranks of Welsh rugby which began with the establishment of the team in 2009 and saw the side getting its first taste of WRU National League success, clinching the Division One East title, in 2012-13 .

The new man or woman at the helm will be tasked with consolidating that position and building for a future which could see RGC 1404 rival the Ospreys, Newport Gwent Dragons, Scarlets and Cardiff Blues both on the pitch and off it, whilst developing participation in the region long thought to be an untapped resource for Welsh rugby.

The application process for a new General Manager for the North Wales Development Region opened today, Wednesday, with an appointment expected by the end of July.

“These are exciting times for rugby in North Wales and this new appointment could be a real game changer for the further development of the region,” said Phillips.

“If you look at how far RGC 1404 have come already in just a few years and realise that there are no restrictions to the potential for the success in the region, then you can see that this is a major appointment for Welsh rugby.

“North Wales has a key role to play in the one strategic objective which is perhaps most important to safeguarding the future of our national game

“There is a huge opportunity for further growth in North Wales and to create a truly united approach to rugby throughout the country.

“It is our stated aim to encourage more people to play more rugby, more often and with more enjoyment and RGC 1404 are a standard bearer for the development of the game in North Wales that must continue to be nurtured.

“We are looking for a leader who will rally support in every quarter, from supporters in the region through to local councils and rugby clubs, but who will also be able to take a long term strategic approach and excel in the commercial aspects of the role.

“This is a business appointment in an emerging rugby heartland which would equally suit someone with the relevant experience from another major sport around the globe as a Welshman or woman with a passion for the game and in developing its future. “

The General Manager will be responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive business plan focussed on the sustainability of rugby in North Wales and will ensure the direct alignment of the performance and participation areas of the region within nationally led initiatives.

The appointment carries a salary band in the top bracket of the WRU’s pay structure and will be made on an initial three year contract.  To apply for the post of General Manager, North Wales Development Region please follow this link: http://www.wru.wales/eng/thewru/vacancies/current_vacancies.php
