Half-term activities help young people improve skills

Throughout May Half Term, Ceredigion Youth Service provided a variety of activities and courses for young people throughout the county.

Overall, 40 young people aged between 11-18 participated in a free two-day Bush Craft taster course, an upcycling project based at Aberaeron Youth Centre, and a two-day Youth Leader residential course at Gwersyll yr Urdd Llangrannog.

The Bush Craft course was held and delivered by Tir Coed instructors at Llanfarian woodlands as part of the VINE project. The young people were able to gain hands-on practical experience of lighting and controlling fires, safe use of knife- whittling to create utensils, shelter construction, cooking on open fires, creating a permanent feature for future groups and navigation. All 19 participants completed an Agored Cymru accreditation in Bush Craft and were able to work on communication and teamwork skills.

Councillor Hag Harris, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Learning Services, Children and Young People’s Partnership said: “These courses not only offer young people the opportunity to come together and learn new skills, but also they enable them to develop their social skills and enhance their well-being by working collectively in order to gain a sense of accomplishment.”

The two-day Youth Leader residential course provided eight young people with opportunities to participate in team building activities, archery, skiing, learning about traditional deep sea siving, survival skills, self-defence, understanding more about forestry conservation and bush craft. All eight young people completed an Agored Cymru accreditation in teamwork.
