Further to the First Minister’s statement in relation to the Welsh Government’s legislative programme, Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies AM said:
“Having done so little at the start of the last Assembly, then having suffered an embarrassing eleventh hour defeat on the Public Health Bill due to their own stubbornness, Labour Ministers have a lot to learn about legislating.
“Though some proposals, including an Additional Learning Needs Bill and others, are welcome, this statement tells us very little new information. Equally, there are concerns – with plans to abolish right to buy, and right to acquire, set to restrict opportunity and social mobility.
“Welsh Conservatives proposed a dozen bills to kick-start this Assembly, ranging from issues such as autism, low tax, older people’s rights and wildlife, and we want to see this new Welsh Government utilise their powers ambitiously to deliver change.
“The First Minister’s suggestion that he is eager to embrace more backbench legislation is welcome. Given the composition of the Assembly, and the balance in public opinion, we should be utilising the range of talents across the Assembly to explore legislative solutions to the unique challenges Wales faces.”
