Scarlets tighthead prop Samson Lee will miss the start of the Guinness PRO12 season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Lee, 23, underwent surgery to his left shoulder yesterday ruling him out of the start of the season.

Scarlets will welcome back DTH van der Merwe, Emyr Phillips and Gareth Owen for the start of the season.

Owen, 27, is one of a number of current Scarlets who have signed contract extensions ahead of the 2016-17 season. The versatile backline player has represented Wales 7s and Wales U19s and U20s. Owen featured in 22 of Scarlets’ competitive games in 2015-16, named in the starting line up for 18 of those either at wing or centre.

Phillips is also one of the 12-strong group to have extended their contracts keeping them at the Scarlets.

Matthew Rees, Scarlets Head Physiotherapist said: “Samson has undergone shoulder surgery and is expected to be unavailable for 12-16 weeks. We’re pleased to see DTH, Emyr and Gareth making good progress and on track to be back in action for the start of the season.”
