Police warning following distraction burglaries

Residents of Carmarthenshire are asked to be extra vigilant if someone knocks their door reporting alleged damage to their property.

Dyfed-Powys Police has received three reports of distraction burglaries. The first incident occurred in Upper Tumble, the second in Carmarthen and the third in Gorslas.

It’s believed the incidents have been carried out by the same two young men aged around 18-20 years. Both are wearing dark clothing. One of them is of slight build, around 6 feet tall and has a very slight moustache.

Homeowners are being urged if someone knocks on their door to report damage to their property do not let them in, close the door and call the police immediately on 101 if the individuals have left the scene, or call 999 if they are still at your property.

There are a few simple steps which residents can take to protect themselves against distraction burglary. Share these top tips with family, friends or neighbours- anyone or you think could be at risk:

• Not sure? Don’t open the door.

• Check the identity of callers by calling the company they claim to be from. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory, online or provided independently by your service provider. Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller – they may be bogus.

• Telephone a neighbour or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door to them.

• Ensure that if you do let somebody in to your home, that you close the door behind them – distraction burglars often work in teams, while you’re distracted another person may sneak in through an open door.

• If somebody asks for your help, needs to make a telephone call, needs a drink or wants directions, don’t feel pressurised into letting them in. Help through a closed door, refer them to a younger neighbour or call to ask someone to assist.

• Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times.

• The “Waterboard” has not existed for 28 years; turn away anyone purporting to be from it.

• Keep cash in the bank where it is secure.

• Consider storing valuable jewellery in a bank deposit box- contact your bank for details.
