Young Traders Competition, Llanelli

Three primary schools battled it out against each other in a bid to win the title Carmarthenshire Young Trader of 2016, which was organised by Carmarthenshire County Council on Thursday July 7 at Llanelli outdoor market.

Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel, Ysgol Gynradd Pont-iets  and Ysgol Gynradd Pum Heol took  part in the competition with teams of up to 5 pupils from Years 5 and 6. The children were asked to come up with a business idea, market it and sell their product. The winner was the school which made the most profit.

All three schools made a huge effort before the event to look into the products they were selling , how to price their products ,how they were going to market them on the day and how they were going to decorate their stall. On the day all the children were motivated and enthusiastic in selling their products and even going out to purchase more on the day in order to sell them on, showing initiative and real entrepreneurial skills.

The winning school was Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel raising £437 for the school. They received the 2016 trophy from Cllr. David Jenkins County Council executive board member responsible for markets, during a presentation ceremony after the event.

Sponsors of the event; Llanelli Star, IWEC Electrical services, Dragon Energy , Lloyd & Gravell , Llanelli Chamber of Trade and Rook’s Trophies & Engraving were also on hand to congratulate all teams at the presentation.

County Council executive board member responsible for markets, Cllr David Jenkins, said: “The response, to this competition, by the schools has been fantastic. The children, ably supported by members of the staff, performed brilliantly on the day and their enthusiasm shone through. There are clearly a lot of young people out there with great business ideas and this competition is an excellent opportunity for them to try their hand at trading for a day. It’s also of benefit to the school as a whole as any profit made will go back to them. This competition couldn’t have gone ahead without the financial support of local businesses. The event was a huge success and we are now looking to make it an annual event in all of our three market towns – Ammanford/ Llandeilo, Carmarthen & Llanelli”
