The Big Welsh Derby return leg between North Wales Crusaders and South Wales Scorpions opens the League 1 Shield when the fixtures kick off on Saturday 23rd July.

However the game will take place in England. As Crusaders’ regular Wrexham ground is out of use, it’s taking place at the home of Chester RUFC with a 2.30pm kick-off.

The Scorpions’ three home matches in the competition will be against Newcastle Thunder on July 31st, Oxford on August 21st and Hemel on September 4th, all taking place at Caerphilly RFC.

Away matches at Coventry Bears on August 6th and Gloucestershire All Golds on September 11th complete their fixtures.

Scorpions’ coach Phil Carleton said: “There will be no easy games in this split, I believe everyone is capable of beating one another on their day.

“The key to this part of the season will be ensuring we are at our best all the time. I don’t think I’d be doing any side an injustice by saying before the split, there are games we all target for wins and performances. Now, it’s all about wins.

“I know the boys are looking forward to the first and last games – another Welsh derby and a trip to All Golds – both being geographically our closest rivals, always makes them great encounters.

“Our form leading into these games is far from perfect, that said there have been some real chinks of light to our performances of late. With a little more polish and few wiser decisions from players and head coach alike, I’m hoping we’ll see a neat run in to the end of the season. Who knows we may even turn a few heads as we go.”
