More than 5000 items of bulky waste were collected by Neath Port Talbot Council in the last three months. Many of these were white goods which would have been dumped years ago, but are now recycled. Residents disposed of 385 fridges and freezers, 96 vacuum cleaners, 78 washing machines and 63 cookers amongst a host of other items as interest in the bulky collection service has grown.

Along with this increase in demand for the service there has been a surge in the number of people booking bulky waste collections online, with more than 40% of bookings now being made this way. The Council’s Switch campaign has seen a number of other services become available online, the aim is to make life easier for residents by allowing them to access services at a convenient time for them rather than having to visit or call the Council during working hours.

For £20 per collection, the bulky waste service allows residents to get rid of any items that are too big for the normal bin collections. Items as diverse as microwaves, dishwashers, chests of drawers, wardrobes and even bundles of wood have been picked up by the Council’s collection service in recent months. The Council ensures that all suitable items are recycled.

Cllr Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “It’s great to see so many residents using our bulk waste collection service. While interest has grown in recent months, many people don’t realise that we offer such a service and that we can recycle their old and broken items.

“The fact that the service is available online is appealing for residents, with many requesting bulky waste collections this way.

“Several Council services are now online including paying for Council Tax, renewing library books and ordering parking permits. Further services are due to be added in the coming months and can be found on the Council’s website under the Switch logo.”

As well as ordering bulky waste collections, residents can also request replacement recycling equipment online such as recycling boxes and bags, food waste caddies and wheelie bins.
