Classic stories to be performed at historic castle

Classic William Shakespeare, Roald Dahl and Jonathan Swift stories are being brought to life in Swansea later this summer.

Outdoor theatre performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Danny the Champion of the World, and Gulliver’s Travels will be held at Oystermouth Castle in August.

Both Danny the Champion of the World and A Midsummer Night’s Dream take place on Thursday August 4, starting at 2pm and 7.30pm respectively. Gulliver’s Travels is being performed at 2pm on Tuesday August 9.

Gates for all three performances open an hour beforehand.

Swansea Council is behind the events, in association with NFU Mutual.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “Oystermouth Castle’s historic, coastal setting makes it a fantastic venue for outdoor theatre performances. These types of events have always proven especially popular in the past, so I’d urge anyone interested to book their tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Danny the Champion of the World and Gulliver’s Travels are among the most popular publications of all-time. They’re family-friendly stories that will appeal to people of all ages.

“As well as outdoor theatre, we’re also teaming up with The Luna Cinema to show Back to the Future and Grease on a giant screen in Oystermouth Castle in September. All these events form part of the Enjoy Swansea Bay programme of events and activities that’s got something for everyone this summer and beyond.”

Outdoor theatre tickets are £7 in advance and £8 on the day for children’s afternoon performances, and £11 in advance and £14 on the day for evening performances. Family tickets in advance and concessions are also available, with free entry for children aged three and under.
