Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies meets new Prime Minister Theresa May

Prime Minister Theresa May and Andrew RT Davies AM met today at the National Assembly for Wales, with the Welsh Conservative leader stating that Ms May is a “fantastic advocate and champion” for Wales.

Mr Davies discussed with the Prime Minister the future of the nation’s steel industry, and the importance of the draft Wales Bill to the devolved settlement.

He also raised the importance of North Wales being at the heart of any plans to revive northern economies, the hugely positive role rail electrification will have for the Welsh economy, and the positive impact action on the Severn Bridge tolls will have for stimulating business and investment in Wales.

With a review into the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project also on-going, Mr Davies emphasised what a critical time it is for Wales.

Following the recent vote for the UK to leave the European Union, Mr Davies has also emphasised the need to ensure Wales is integral to discussions on negotiating the terms of withdrawal, and has welcomed David Jones MP’s appointment as a government minister with responsibility for the UK’s exit.

After today’s meeting, Andrew RT Davies AM said:

“Clearly, the UK Government is hugely committed to the future of the nation’s steel industry, and we will work tirelessly with this new administration to ensure a successful future for our steel communities.

“I was pleased to emphasise to the new Prime Minister the vital role that projects such as rail electrification, reducing the Severn Bridge tolls and action on the North Wales Growth Deal will have on our nation’s future prosperity.

“These are new, exciting times for Wales and the UK. As we prepare for negotiations following the UK’s decision to leave the EU, it is vital Wales is at the heart of those discussions, and the Prime Minister’s appointment of a Welsh MP to the department dealing with our exit is another hugely welcome move. Indeed, the interests of the whole of the UK must be at the centre of these discussions and, as the Royal Welsh Show gets underway, it is vital the long-term future of Welsh agriculture is secured.”
