Keep active this Summer and get involved!

The schools have broken up for the summer holidays, but don’t panic, there is a whole host of activities to keep young people entertained available right on your doorstep!

Ceredigion County Council Youth Service is offering young people aged between 11-24 years the opportunity to meet new friends, learn new skills and develop themselves further in preparation for going back to school, college or employment.

Courses range from ‘Summer skills’ for young people aged between 16-24, on every Monday and Tuesday of the six week holiday, the courses range from mechanics to hairdressing to digital photography. These course are held at Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training in Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth.

The ‘Upcycling Art Project’ is based in Cardigan and is for young people aged between 11-19, so if you’re interested in arts and crafts and want to learn more about using materials and upcycling them into useful products, this is the course for you. The course Is being held on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 July between 10-4pm.

If you love camping and the great outdoors and are aged between 11-14 why not join a two-day camping trip to Pembrokeshire on Wednesday 3  and Thursday 4 August. On the trip you will meet other young people, take part in activities like star gazing, open fire cooking and much more, there is limited space on this trip so get in touch now to book your place. The trip costs £10 with local pick-ups available.

There is also a trip to Wales’s biggest skate park on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 August – Cardiff’s RampWorlds Skate Park – you can bring your own scooter, BMX or skateboard, and will also get the chance to go Ten Pin Bowling and stay overnight at the Urdd Hostel in Cardiff Bay. Finishing off with a visit to Llanelli’s Skate Park on the way home. Limited spaces and boking essential, cost £20 with local pick-ups available.

If you’re aged between 14-19 there is Bushcraft activity days available on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 August, offering you the chance to develop outdoor and adventure skills such as shelter building, orienteering, wood carving and much more. This is a free two-day course delivered in partnership with Tir Coed in Llanfarian near Aberystwyth. Limited spaces, booking is essential.

Have you ever wondered what is like to be a firefighter or do you want a career in firefighting? A free two-day programme is being organised on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 August, in partnership with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service in Lampeter Fire Station, there are limited spaces so booking is essential.

Project ROC is a social education programme that uses rugby to provide 14-19 year olds with valuable life skills such as confidence, communication and listening.  The course is for boys and girls and will allow you to experience different activities such as team building, guest speakers and workshops. This programme is being held on Wednesday 31 August to Friday 2 September in Gwersyll yr Urdd Llangrannog. Spaces are limited so booking is essential.

Councillor Hag Harris, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Learning Services, Children and Young People’s Partnership said: “These summer holiday courses and activities give young people the chance to come together and learn new skills, but they can also enhance social skills and well-being and really help young people to develop and be the best they can be.”
