Work is progressing well on the redevelopment of Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera School site.

Dawnus Construction are undertaking the £12.5m first phase of the development, which is on target for completion late 2016.

This phase will see the construction of a new teaching block comprising 31 teaching spaces such as class rooms, specialist design technology rooms and science labs, as well as new administration areas, catering facilities and a learning resource centre.

The redevelopment of the Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera campus is part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s plans for an ‘all-through’ school providing Welsh medium education for over 1,100 pupils aged 3-18 in the north of the County Borough.

It will bring together Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Y Wern, a Welsh medium primary school, and Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera, a Welsh medium secondary school on one site and addresses issues around significant repair and maintenance costs and surplus capacity.

Following a recent visit to the school Council Leader Cllr Ali Thomas welcomed the progress which had been made

He said: “The redevelopment of YG Ystalyfera is another important step towards our objective of equipping pupils across the county borough with the best possible facilities and opportunities for learning.”

“I am delighted to see taking shape these new school buildings which will strengthen the delivery of Welsh language education in the county borough”
