New group helps to clean up their local area

A brand new environmental group based in and around Rhydargaeau have undertaken their first litter pick as a fully constituted group.

The newly formed group named “TRASH” (Terminating Rubbish and Sanitising Hedgerows) spent a Friday evening clearing litter and fly tipped rubbish from the lanes around Rhydargaeau. Their aim is to rid the area of litter and invasive plant species by working together as a community. They hope to gather more support over time so even more can be achieved in the future.

The group has been set up with support from environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, who provided them with assistance in setting up their constitution, insurance and equipment through the Tidy Towns programme.

Tidy Towns is a community-based initiative run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy and funded by Welsh Government. The initiative helps people take action by getting involved in maintaining and improvinging their local environment.

Barbara Ollett, secretary of TRASH said: “It was great to see such a decent turnout for our first event, and we hope the group will go from strength to strength in the future. Please join us to help keep our area clean; we have already planned our second event which will take place on Friday 19th August at 7pm, meeting at Capel Bwlch y Corn. We are also very thankful to our youngest member William who came up with our apt group name!”

Dan Snaith, Keep Wales Tidy’s officer for Carmarthenshire said: “It was very encouraging to see so many people taking an interest in environmental issues in their local area. When you consider how rural this part of Carmarthenshire is, it is even more impressive to have such a high level of interest in this type of group and their related activities.”
