As Liverpool prepares to bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Welsh Conservative AMs have branded it “shameful” that the Welsh Labour Government’s ambition for Wales does not match that of the Merseyside city.

Labour Ministers recently confirmed that a bid from Wales for the 2026 event would not be forthcoming, in a move met with disappointment across the sporting community, including from two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Colin Jackson.

A commitment to spearhead a Wales bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games was included in the Welsh Conservative Party’s manifesto.

The news came in the lead up to the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, for which the Welsh Conservative Group sent a good luck message to Welsh athletes, and all Team GB participants, this week.

Shadow Secretary for Sport, Russell George AM, said:

“With Liverpool planning to bid for the Commonwealth Games, it is bitterly disappointing, and shameful, that Labour Ministers do not share such ambition for Wales.

“As we head into the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, there will be discussions as to the need to ensure major sporting events act as a catalyst for economic and social change. Sadly, an ideal opportunity for Wales in 2026 is set to be missed due to Welsh Labour’s approach.”

Welsh Conservative leader, Andrew RT Davies, added:

“In their first three months in office, this Labour administration has been characterised by inaction, and a complete lack of ambition.

“The Commonwealth Games could be potentially huge for Wales – and many here will look on aghast with a bid forthcoming from Liverpool; but nothing from Wales.”
