First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones has wished Welsh Olympic athletes good luck at the Games in Rio.
Speaking ahead of the opening ceremony, the First Minister spoke about how proud he is of Wales’ recent sporting successes and how it has helped contribute to the country’s unprecedented global profile.
The First Minister said:
“This is an exceptional time for Welsh sport, and a great time to be a Welsh sports fan. The Welsh football team returned home heroes from Euro 2016 after making history – and many dreams come true – by progressing to the semi finals in the thrilling tournament.
“I am hopeful this sporting success will continue, especially as we have the highest number of Welsh athletes ever to compete in an overseas Olympics.“The success of our sportsmen and women is truly inspirational. I hope watching our Olympic athletes take part in the Rio Games will inspire many people across Wales to follow in their footsteps and get involved in sport.
“Pob lwc to our Welsh stars – the world is watching so let’s show them what the Welsh are made of!”
