CWMAMAN paddling pool is getting a much-needed makeover from the Next Steps candidates.

TRJ Ltd agreed to carry out the work as part of the Next Steps project to bring the pool up to standard for the benefit of the local community.

Cwmaman Town Council is delighted that the pool – which is around 80 years old – will be transformed for residents to enjoy once again.

Ten candidates have been chosen to take part in the Next Steps competition to win full-time paid construction apprenticeships with local building firms TRJ Ltd as well as Lloyd & Gravell Ltd.

They are working alongside skilled tradesmen to learn basic skills including carpentry, bricklaying, plastering and ground works.

Two community projects have been chosen – Cwmaman pool and creating an outdoor area at Llys Y Bryn care home in Llanelli.

The pool was in a bad state and works have included sealing and replastering the lining.

Cwmaman Mayor Kevin Madge said the pool would be open before the end of the summer: “We are delighted that TRJ were willing to help us so that the pool can be reopened.

“The candidates have been working hard and have made lots of progress very quickly. It is a tremendous facility and we are very thankful.”

The town council is also looking at putting in splash pads at the park to complement the refurbished paddling pool.

Director of TRJ Ltd Owain Jones said: “We are very pleased to be able to help Cwmaman Town Council; the pool is an excellent community facility and we are looking forward to seeing people using it again.

“As well as providing apprenticeship opportunities, Next Steps is about giving back to the community.”

Next Steps is a joint initiative between the two building firms and Constructing Carmarthenshire Together – a partnership between Carmarthenshire County Council’s Property division, Coleg Sir Gâr, and Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd.

Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “It is great to see communities benefitting from Next Steps. It is a fantastic experience for the candidates, as well as learning essential skills they are doing something rewarding for the benefit of local people.”
