Commenting on news that the 701 Aberystwyth – Carmarthen – Cardiff bus service that ended on Friday, Russell George AM, Shadow Secretary for Economy and Transport, said:
“It is very sad to see the prospect of a vital Aberystwyth to Cardiff bus route disappearing.
“There are many people who rely on this service to go to and from the town.
“Indeed, taking the train – if you are travelling from Cardiff – is the only other option if you do not have access to a car, which is often the case for the large number of students who study there. And that’s a service that has to go via Shrewsbury in England!
“The Welsh Government must do all in its power to find another operator to take on this route, and ensure additional funding to help revive rural bus routes such as this.
“Aberystwyth, as a tourist destination and a globally leading university town, relies on strong transport links. Anything which threatens this must be addressed in urgency.
“Having already cut the bus services support grant, this is another example where Labour ministers are not doing enough to improve connectivity to Wales’ more isolated regions.”
