Scarlets’ pre-season friendly clash against Exeter Chiefs was an opportunity to see the region’s next generation in action and about giving individuals an opportunity to be selected says head coach Wayne Pivac.

The Scarlets took on two strong Exeter Chiefs sides in the pre-season friendly at a sunny Sandy Park with the Chiefs claiming a 45-3 victory.

Speaking after the game Pivac said: “We want to be in games and competing to win games whatever what time of year but the focus is on the form of individuals and giving them a chance to be selected.

“We turned down a few kicks at goal in the first half to work on things that unfortunately didn’t come off. We were still in the game at 10-3 and things could have been different had we chipped away 10-6, 10-9.

“We were reasonably happy with the first half and there was certainly a base there to work from.

“We’ll pull the game to pieces, see what the work-ons are and make sure that we take the positives and go forward with an added group next week. The internationals will be back in the fold for selection next week.”

Nine players made their Scarlets debuts in the opening clash of 2016-17; Rynier Bernardo, Jonathan Evans, Rhys Patchell, Taylor Davies, Werner Kruger, Dafydd Hughes, Tadhg Beirhe, Declan Smith, Richard Smith.

Scarlets take on Bath Rugby, at Parc Eirias, on Saturday 20th August, kick-off 2.30pm.

All accreditation requests to be emailed to nerys@scarlets.wales by 5pm Wednesday.
