Following reports that Welsh football fans have snapped up 10,000 tournament tickets for the 2018 World Cup Qualifying stage, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Sport – Russell George AM – has said that the Welsh team has “inspired a generation”.
Mr George, the Montgomeryshire AM, said that the team had left a legacy that would not only inspire a new generation of fans, but which could carry them into the next competition with huge confidence.
He said:
“When people talk about legacy, in terms of of major sporting events, the concept is often ridiculed. But it’s no exaggeration to describe this performance as transformational for Welsh football and they must be raring to get started again.
“These players have inspired a generation, caught the imagination of the Welsh public, and the results are there to see in the huge interest in following the boys into the next competition.
“From a practical point of view, we need to make the best use of this opportunity to get young people playing the sport, not only to uncover the next Gareth Bale, but to inspire children to enjoying a more active lifestyle.”
