South Wales Scorpionsâ Development side stormed to a 48-12 win over an Ireland select but their visitors gave them plenty to think about throughout putting in a great effort.
The Irish side were primarily selected from the Ireland under 19 side, who used the game as a warm up before their international against Scotland next week.
Scorpions took the lead after seven minutes when Shane Lee kicked a smart grubber and Lewys Willacott pounced. Ben Jones missed the kick.
They extended their advantage just after the 20 minute mark when Mike Edwards used his strength to power through and Jones landed the extras.
It wasnât long before the young Welsh side went 16-0 up. Ethan Coombes diving over, his second try in as many days after grounding for Valley Cougars against West Wales Raiders on Saturday, and Jones converting.
Ireland hit back straight away when Johnny Murphy was sent over and Daragh Oxley converted.
But the Welsh went into half-time with a 22-6 lead following an excellent clean break from Rhys Gant, converted well by Ben Jones.
Scorpions scored first in the second half. A great passing move ended with Josh Stafford-Smith scoring in the corner. Jones missed the kick.
They scored again straight away. Lewis Hughes was sent over with Jones converting to make it 32-6.
That was quickly followed by Lewys Willacott sprinted half the length of his field for his second. Jonesâ conversion attempt hit the post.
Scorpions were on fire. Shane Lee joined Coombes by scoring two tries in two days, sprinting over to bring up the 40 and Jones converting.
Lewis âMaddogâ Hughes also brought up his brace with an outstanding run leaving Jones with an easy kick making it 48-6.
However the last say went to Ireland with a deserved try after pressuring in various stages throughout the half, as Caolan Fitzhenry stormed through and Riley Dean converted well.
