Neath Port Talbot schools have secured their best ever performances at GCSE, breaking the 60% mark for the first time ever.
Provisional data shows that the percentage of students achieving the ‘gold star’ benchmark of five GCSEs including English / Welsh and mathematics has improved by 3% to 61%. This performance is even more outstanding when you consider that NPT is the second most challenged local authority in Wales when using free school meals as an indicator of deprivation.
Good improvements have been secured in the percentage of students achieving A*-C grades in either English or Welsh first language and mathematics. The percentage of pupils entitled to free school meals achieving the gold star benchmark of Level 2 including language and maths has also increased. A number of our schools have secured their best ever outcomes.
Council Leader, Cllr Ali Thomas, said, “I am very proud of our young people in Neath Port Talbot and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported them to achieve these very impressive results. Their parents, schools and communities must also take great pride in their achievements. I would like to wish them well in their future studies or chosen careers.”
Councillor Peter Rees, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, School Improvement and Lifelong Learning said, “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate all pupils on their success and also to pay tribute to all those who have supported them in achieving such remarkable, but highly deserved, results ”.
Aled Evans, Director of Education, Leisure & Lifelong Learning commented, “Schools have again produced outstanding outcomes that place Neath Port Talbot pupils at the forefront of learning in Wales. I congratulate all pupils on their success and would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the dedication and support provided by head teachers and all their staff, including the local authority’s support staff.”
