The Welsh Government is to extend its clinical response model pilot for a further six months, according to a written statement issued by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing, and Sport.

Welsh Conservatives have previously expressed scepticism over the Welsh Government’s decision to cut targets for ambulance response times to 65%, arguing that lowering targets only offers an “illusion of improved performance”.

Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health, Angela Burns, said:

“The way to improve ambulance response times is to invest in the service and its staff, and to tackle issues like delayed transfers of care. Not to lower targets.

“Whilst we welcome any signs of improving performance, sceptics will continue to have concerns that the new measures have only given the illusion of improvement.

“It is vital, therefore, that efforts now focus on achieving consistency in response times and the Welsh Government must provide the workforce with the support it needs and deserves.

“Ambulance staff work extremely hard in an incredibly challenging environment, and they need clear guidance from the Welsh Government, and we look forward to the publication of the final evaluation on this pilot scheme.”
