Greater Powers for North Wales could “bridge psychological gap” with Assembly

Calls for the devolution of powers over employment, taxes, skills and transport to North Wales have been welcomed by Welsh Conservatives.

A report backed by the region’s six local councils could boost the regional economy and create new jobs, as well as “bridging the psychological gap” between North Wales and the Welsh Government in Cardiff.

Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, said:

“These innovative and ambitious proposals should be supported by the First Minister and his Government, with power being placed firmly in the hands of local communities.

“Devolving economic levers to North Wales could kick start the regional economy, boosting jobs and prosperity.

“It’s also an opportunity to bridge the psychological gap between North Wales and the Welsh Assembly, and we should embrace the chance to do things differently.

“I have warned that the future of the Assembly could be placed in doubt if we don’t act collectively to engage with and speak for communities the length and breadth of Wales and this is an opportunity that we cannot afford to miss.”

Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government, Janet Finch-Saunders, said:

“In the absence of greater clarity from the Welsh Government over its own plans to support North Wales, these proposals are hugely welcome.

“The plates are shifting in Welsh politics and the old orthodoxies no longer apply. We have an opportunity to act on behalf of local communities and deliver radical solutions, and that could mean some power shifting away from the centre.

“Devolving powers to North Wales could play a pivotal role in boosting our regional economy, and a growth deal would enable local authorities, businesses and communities to set the agenda.

“Councillors are crying out for more responsibility and we should always consider initiatives which put power in local hands with an open mind.”
