A series of events will be held in Cross Hands next week to look at skills gaps and job seekers’ views of certain types of jobs.
On Tuesday and Wednesday September 27 and 28 Carmarthenshire County Council will be holding employment focus groups to discuss and look at the skills gaps and perceptions of the tourism sector, retail sector, domiciliary care and contact centres.
The purpose of the focus groups is to look at perceptions of employment in these sectors, and to look at how those roles can be made more attractive to those seeking employment.
Opinions, feedback and skills requirements are being sought from employers and the information will be used to deliver sessions within schools, employability projects and other employment-related schemes, with the view to support those seeking employment into these roles and to raise awareness of the types of careers that can be achieved within the sectors.
These employer events will be held at Careers Wales Offices, Cross Hands. Key representatives from the sectors have been invited to the sessions including Odeon, Costa Coffee, Aberglasney Gardens, Cathedral Hygiene, Pear Tree Deli, Marks and Spencer, DVLA, Gwalia, Mihomecare, Stradey Park Hotel, and Gateway Holiday Park to name but a few. There are different dates and times for each sector and it is essential to book a place if you are interested in attending to give your view and input.

The need to deliver Perceptions of Key Employment Sector Focus Groups was identified within the Employment & Skills Group, which has been set up to support the Regeneration Transformation Master Plan for Carmarthenshire. The group identify skills and employability needs to support the delivery of the regeneration schemes identified in the approved transformation team action plans for: Carmarthen & Rural Area, Llanelli & Coastal, Cross Hands and Ammanford.
The team markets the opportunities for employment, increased skills and business growth throughout Carmarthenshire, identifying gaps in provision and developing initiatives to support the skills and employability element of the transformation plans.
