Pembrokeshire County Council has received an award for the £4.9 million Johnston to Tiers Cross (Bulford Road) highways project which opened in the summer of 2015.
The Civil Engineering and Environmental Quality Assessment (CEEQUAL) award was for the delivery team’s strategy and performance in relation to their approach to sustainability throughout the project.
Members of the team were presented with the award by Sir John Armitt, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) at a recent Institution debate on Welsh infrastructure.
The Bulford Road project provides significant improvements to the road between Tiers Cross and Johnston.
The original road was narrow with a substandard alignment and used by relatively high numbers of heavy goods vehicles.
The condition of the old road made it a particularly difficult route for all road users including pedestrians and cyclists and those who live in the properties fronting onto the road.
The new road has improved access to the major strategic energy site of South Hook LNG and other development sites located to the west of Milford Haven and is an alternative route for vehicles which otherwise may have driven through the town.
New paths were also constructed to improve the links between Tiers Cross and Johnston for pedestrians and cyclists.
While the project required the construction of a new road, measures were taken where possible to provide ecological enhancements and improve the overall biodiversity of the project area.
Also, an assessment was undertaken with the objectives of constructing a highway that will be durable, low maintenance and incorporates recycled materials.
