Responding to Plaid Cymru’s calls for more funding to ensure more teachers and assistants can use Welsh in the classroom, Welsh Conservative Shadow Secretary for Education, Darren Millar AM, said:
“In order for the Welsh language to thrive, we not only need to boost funding in schools, we need also to urgently increase the uptake of adult learners.
“Enrolment for adult learners at Welsh Adults Centres dropped by nearly 3000 in the year 2014/15 compared to the previous year, and figures for the most recent year are notably absent*. One is left wondering why.
“Bolstering these enrolments is key if the Labour-led Welsh Government is to reverse the downward trend of Welsh proficiency, and efforts towards this end must feature prominently in the Cabinet Secretary’s education strategy going forward.”
