Scarlets secured their first victory of the season on Saturday evening as they took on reigning champions Connacht in the fourth round of the GUINNESS PRO12 at Parc y Scarlets.
Outside half Rhys Patchell kicked two conversions and a late drop goal to put a losing bonus point out of Connacht’s reach.
The victory saw Scarlets pick up four important points which moved the region to the eighth position in the table.
Speaking after the game Patchell said; “It was a big relief to get the victory. We just needed to win one more than anything. Now that we have won our first game we’ll hopefully see the confidence return.
“It wasn’t pretty on occasions but we felt that we controlled the territory quite well and put Connacht under enough pressure for them to crack.
“We’ve lost three before today [Saturday] but we have been away to Kingspan Stadium and that isn’t an easy place to go.
“We’ve won the first one now and hopefully we can build on it.’
For the second consecutive game the Scarlets had to battle the conditions at Parc y Scarlets as the wind and rain hampered play.
Patchell went on to say: “It wasn’t nice out there. Nobody wants to see us playing in the rain but unfortunately that’s what it is to play rugby in Wales!”
Scarlets head to Italy this weekend to take on Benetton Treviso who will be buoyed after a victory over fellow Welsh region Newport Gwent Dragons on Friday evening.
Patchell continued; “They secured a brilliant win over the Dragons last night [Friday]. We’ll be in Monday and will build on this result and see how we go.”
Scarlets will return to Parc y Scarlets on Saturday 8th October to take on Newport Gwent Dragons for the first of GUINNESS PRO12’s big weekends, kick-off 7.35pm.
