Labour’s First Minister has endorsed the “most left wing agenda” in British politics since the Cold War, say the Welsh Conservatives.

During an exchange in First Minister’s Questions in the Welsh Assembly this afternoon, the First Minister unequivocally backed Mr Corbyn to be the next Prime Minister.

The endorsement came just hours after the UK Labour leader and colleagues hinted at a radical left wing programme including: scrapping Trident, hiking taxes and hundreds of millions of pounds in un-costed spending commitments.

Speaking outside the Senedd, the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, said:

“The First Minister has finally backed Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, and in doing so endorsed the most left wing agenda seen in British politics since the end of the Cold War.

“It’s a programme which includes half a billion pounds in new spending commitments, higher taxes, the scrapping of our nuclear deterrent, and a refusal to back NATO. And yet the First Minister believes that it’s in Wales and the UK’s interest to have Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister.

“Michael Foot’s 1983 manifesto has been called the ‘longest suicide note’ in history, and it’s widely accepted that Ed Milliband wrote his own epitaph on an 8-foot tombstone in 2015. But Carwyn Jones may just have endorsed the final installation of a trilogy that leads to the demise of the Labour Party.

“The country needs strong leadership and a clear sense of direction – not the student politics of the 70s. It’s crystal clear that only the Conservatives, led by Theresa May, can deliver a country that works for everyone – not just the privileged few.”
