Brexit contradictions expose chaos at the heart of Westminster parties

Plaid Cymru Shadow Cabinet Secretary for External Affairs, Steffan Lewis AM, has today criticised the ‘chaos at the heart of the Westminster parties’ over the issue of the UK’s departure from the European Union.

Steffan Lewis pointed to how Prime Minister Theresa May had now publicly rebuked all three of her Brexit Ministers – foreign secretary Boris Johnson, trade secretary Liam Fox, and Brexit secretary David Davis – for contradicting the official UK government position.

He also pointed to the Labour Welsh Government’s u-turns on the issue of a Welsh veto on the final terms of the UK Brexit deal, and their position on membership of the single market.

Plaid Cymru’s Steffan Lewis AM said:

“The contradictions over Brexit we have heard from Labour and the Tories in recent weeks expose the chaos at the heart of the Westminster parties.

“Prime Minister Theresa May has now publicly rebuked all three of her Brexit Ministers – Boris Johnson, Liam Fox and David Davis – for contradicting the official government position on matters such as single market membership and the triggering of article 50.

“At the other end of the M4, the Labour Welsh Government has performed several u-turns in the space of a few days, outlining various positions on whether or not Wales should be able to exercise a veto on the final terms of Brexit, and on membership of the single market. Their positions remain unclear.

“Wales is being failed by the London parties who are consumed by infighting rather than focused on protecting the national interest.

“From the outset, Plaid Cymru has been clear that safeguarding the economy should be the top priority in any negotiations. We have been consistent that Wales and the wider UK should retain membership of the single market.

“People voted to leave the European political union, not the European economic union which is vital to our future economic prospects, and Plaid Cymru is wholly committed to strengthening and securing Welsh trade links and jobs.”
