A six week closure to parts of the A48 outside Carmarthenshire will cause “severe disruption” to motorists and more could have been done to reduce the inconvenience, says Preseli Pembrokeshire AM, Paul Davies.
The criticism comes after a Written Assembly Question by Mr Davies revealed that the works are only being undertaken during daylight hours. The Cabinet Secretary has since published a Written Statement.
Mr Davies says the work could have been done in half the time if works continued on a 24-hour-basis.
He said:
“These road closures are going to cause severe disruption to motorists in the west Wales area, and the Welsh Government could have taken simple steps to reduce the inconvenience.
“Frankly, I was shocked to learn that this work isn’t being done on a 24-hour basis – in which case it could have been completed in half the time.
“It’s clear that these works will cause significant disruption for road users and could have a negative effect on the west Wales economy if this work isn’t carried out quickly.
“I would urge the Cabinet Secretary to look at the programme of works again. It’s pretty clear that these vital improvements could be made in half the time and with much less disruption.”
Angela Burns, AM for Carmarthen West & South Pembrokeshire, said:
“It is baffling as to why these road works are not being carried out on a 24-hour basis, which would considerably mitigate against the inconvenience and damage it is already causing to residents and the local economy.
“The closure of the A48 is not only a massive hindrance to commuters and local residences, but businesses will undoubtedly also be dealt a blow with tourism numbers likely to be down for the coming October half-term.
“I call on the Cabinet Secretary to respond to the concerns of my constituents and detail what steps he is taking to ensure that local businesses are not adversely affected by the works; to reduce noise pollution; and to reassure road users that the project will be completed on time.”
