Nearly a thousand students signed up to Carmarthen’s first ever Student Lock-In – a unique national shopping event which offers students huge retail discounts.
The Lock-In was organised by Carmarthenshire County Council’s economic development team, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and the Student Union.
Over 50 businesses across Carmarthen town centre took part, from national chains to local shops, restaurants and cafes.
At one point on the Tuesday evening event, a queue of students snaked through the town centre – all of them picking up the Lock-In wristbands that would secure their discounts.
Cllr Meryl Gravell, Executive Board Member for regeneration, said: “Our first Student Lock-In was a fantastic success with around 960 students taking part and over 50 businesses signed up.
“Our part in this was to help boost local shopping trade and introduce new customers to the retailers here in Carmarthen. We will now get feedback from traders to see if there is merit in getting involved in this national event again next year.”
John Nash, centre manager at St Catherine’s Walk said: “What a resounding success we had with our first ever Student Lock-in. It was great to see many of the retailers across the town putting on a fun shopping night for new and existing students at the University, as well as sixth formers from local schools. Nearly 1,000 students made the effort to support our town and we are very appreciative. Shops reported bumper sales with one retailer wishing they had another three tills to satisfy the never ending queues.
