AM backs ‘freedom from fear’ campaign for shop workers

Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas has given his support for a trade union campaign for workers to be protected from abuse and violence in the run-up to Christmas.

Mid and West AM Simon Thomas met with members from the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) from across Wales to discuss the attitude of some shoppers to them during the stressful period in the build-up to Christmas.

The trade union has launched a ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign to highlight the behaviour some shop workers have to endure.

The AM for the Party of Wales, Mr Thomas said:

“We all know how hectic it can get when we are trying to get through our lists of presents for friends and family, however we should keep our cool. We need to respect shop workers even during these demanding times.

“Shop staff should not have to put up with harassment or abuse from customers. Employers have a legal and moral obligation to protect their workforce from any unacceptable behaviour.”

Usdaw’s ‘Freedom From Fear’ campaign aims to highlight and prevent violence, threats and abuse against shop workers. Usdaw’s recent annual survey found that more than 300 shop workers are abused or assaulted simply for doing their job every day.
