Anger as FIFA open disciplinary proceedings after poppy displays
Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, has accused FIFA of “spectacular arrogance” after it opened disciplinary proceedings against the Football Association of Wales and the Irish Football Association this morning.
The proceedings relate to poppy displays by Welsh and Northern Irish supporters at recent international matches.
Responding to the announcement, Mr Davies said:
“This is spectacular arrogance from FIFA, who appear hell-bent on instigating a war on the poppy.
“Having made the shameful decision to ban the Welsh team from displaying a symbol of remembrance, Welsh supporters sought to find other ways to pay their respect.
“This was a commendable and respectful tribute from Welsh fans, who simply wanted to join in with millions of others paying their respects across the country.
“Surely FIFA’s time would be better spent tackling the perception of widespread corruption at its core, not pursuing action against ordinary supporters.”
