Angela Burns AM: National strategy an opportunity to make Wales “most dementia-friendly nation in the world”
Welsh Conservatives have today welcomed the Welsh Government’s two-month consultation on a dementia strategy, but regretted that they have not acted sooner given that the UK Government launched its own dementia strategy in 2009.
Meanwhile, cases of dementia have been allowed to rise unabated, recently having overtaken heart disease as Wales’ biggest killer.
Welsh Conservative Shadow Secretary for Health, Angela Burns AM, said:
“While we welcome moves towards a national strategy for this invidious disease, we lament that the Welsh Labour Government has not acted sooner.
“The UK Government implemented a dementia strategy almost a decade ago, so this is yet more catch up from the Labour administration.
“The consultation does however presents us with an opportunity to become the most dementia friendly nation in the world – something Welsh Conservatives have long called for.
“To achieve this we need earlier diagnosis, improved support for carers and increased funding for cutting-edge research.”
