A new playground and car park are being planned for Llanelli’s Parc Howard as part of developments to help secure its future.
Plans have been submitted by Carmarthenshire County Council for the schemes which continue the investment into the much loved public park.
They include a play area, to include a new climbing structure, at the west of the Gorsedd stones, overlooking Pentrepoeth Road.
This has been relocated from the original site to the east, to reduce impact on local residents.
The car park would be developed on a former tennis court close to the Old Road entrance.
A new access road with passing bays and a new footpath are part of the planswhich are now open to consultation,
They follow the approval of a masterplan for the park aimed at securing its future and a series of meetings and consultations with representatives from Llanelli Town Council, Park Howard Association, Friends of Llanelli Museum and Llanelli Community Heritage.
Sensitive commercial development is needed to achieve an income in order for Parc Howard to be sustainable.
It includes potential uses for the historic mansion house, such as a wedding and banqueting venue, conferencing suites and an outdoor marquee.
The former cafe, which adjoins the mansion, could also be brought back to life selling refreshments and afternoon tea.
Plans to utilise the building as a regional centre for genealogy have also been mooted – tying in to Llanelli town centre’s Heritage Six scheme, which involves the library and Llanelly House.
Following consultation, the plans will be considered by the county council’s planning committee.
